19. 5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM A SUMMER AT THOUSAND

Julia here – remember me from my first intern blog post? I’m so happy that I came back to intern at Thousand for the second summer in a row.  I am currently a rising senior at Smith College, finishing up my studies in Economics and Ethics.  Home for me is Minnesota, but after this summer, I’d call Los Angeles my second home. LA living was a blast and I learned a lot.  Let’s coast into the 5 things I learned from a summer at Thousand.

1. ALL TASKS GET THE JOB DONE

This summer I worked on various tasks and realized the importance of everything I did. From shipping out thousands of helmets in a week to cutting out labels for our boxes, I realized that every task, no matter the size, made a difference and helped our small team.

2. WORK, WORK, AND ALSO EAT A BAGEL

Summer kept me busy with fun projects for Thousand, but it’s important not to just get lost in the work. I love that Thousand promotes a balanced workday with office dogs who welcome you with hugs and kisses and all kinds of snacks to help you push through that 2pm slump.

3. ENTER A GIVEAWAY BECAUSE YOU MIGHT WIN

One weekend in LA I went to a pop-up housewarming event for a company named Floyd. Floyd simplifies the process of furniture buying without sacrificing style. I happened to enter a giveaway for a free table... and won! It’s now the only table at Thousand with a fun background story.

4. REMEMBER TO TAKE BREAKS AND CELEBRATE YOUR WORK

Even though Thousand is growing quickly and there’s plenty of work to be done, we take the time to celebrate our wins. It’s become an annual tradition for the whole team to go to Disneyland and California Adventure all together, and of course, it’s everyone’s favorite day of the year… or at least it is for me!

5. TACKLE PUZZLES OUTSIDE OF WORK

Before or after a long day of work, I would shake out some stress by literally climbing over my problems. Climbing clears my head and it is a nice break from the day to day. Building a LA climbing community made my side passion for climbing even more fun and enjoyable.

Just as I expected, I had a wonderful time interning at Thousand for a second summer in a row.  I loved being in a city full of hardworking go-getters, at a company that encourages growth and exploration. Now that I’m back at school, I’m excited for my upcoming senior year and post-graduation adventures. See you later LA – keep on pedaling!
