Your Top MIPS Helmet Questions Answered

Not a day goes by when we’re not thinking about how to keep you safer while riding your bike. From daily commuting to weekend TJ’s runs — and every skate and scoot in between — you can count on us to keep your dome covered. That means we’re constantly seeking out the best and most researched technology for our bike helmets. MIPS technology is one such example.

But what exactly is MIPS? You might have seen or heard the term before, but did you know it originated in Sweden? Did you also know it’s super lightweight and barely noticeable while riding? There’s so much more to MIPS than meets the eye. Here, we answer some of your most common questions about this:

MIPS is an acronym that stands for multi-directional impact protection system. Try saying that five times fast! Research has shown that most bicycle accidents occur at an angle instead of falling straight down. This lifesaving innovation accounts for that.

It works a little something like this: MIPS helmets are built with a low friction layer that typically sits between the helmet’s padding and the EPS foam layer. This MIPS liner is super discreet and lightweight so cyclists barely even notice that it’s there. In the event of a crash, the brain protection system (BPS) allows your head to make a tiny 10-15mm multidirectional movement inside the helmet to reduce rotational force. That last part is critical.

The result of an angled impact is called rotational force. When your head suddenly hits a hard surface such as pavement, dirt, or even snow, a traumatic brain injury could occur because it’s more sensitive to this type of fall. Severe brain injuries can include bleeding, blurry vision, bruising, and losing consciousness. All riders — from road bikes to mountain bikes — are susceptible to injury. A bicycle helmet constructed with a MIPS brain protection system can save your life.

Many of today’s helmet brands — including names you’ve definitely heard of before like Bontrager to Giro and POC to Specialized — offer at least one helmet model designed with the protective MIPS layer. But how exactly did MIPS come about in the first place?

Let’s pedal down memory lane, shall we?

A researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, by the name of Peter Halldin and a Swedish neurosurgeon named Hans von Holst developed this innovative helmet technology. The research originally began by von Holst in 1996, but it wasn’t until 2001 when the company MIPS AB was launched. In 2007, the first equestrian helmet made with MIPS was introduced. Fast forward to 2019 when the company produced 14.2 million of these MIPS slip planes across 583 helmet models including cycling helmets, mountain bike helmets, and skateboard helmets.

Similar to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) label, all MIPS-certified helmets will have a yellow dot on it. If it doesn’t have the dot, don’t buy it.

The short answer is yes. This really shouldn’t be a hard sell because you only get one brain, right? Keep in mind that all helmets in the US must meet certain CPSC standards before they hit the shelves. Your standard non-MIPS helmet is certainly going to do an excellent job at protecting you. If you need some more convincing, an MIPS helmet goes one step further by offering protection against accidental spills at certain angles (the most common type of fall).

All types of riding, especially more intense types like mountain biking and cycling as well as daily commuting, can benefit from this extra protection. The layer is super lightweight (only 25-45 grams), and all helmets with this technology are designed to be well ventilated despite the additional thin layer.

If you’re looking for a new helmet, an MIPS model is definitely a safe bet. Prices range depending on the brand. According to Consumer Reports, you might find an MIPS helmet for as little as $25 and for as much as $400. Some kids' helmets are built with MIPS as well, which oftentimes accounts for the lower end of the price spectrum. The Thousand Chapter MIPS Helmet costs $145, which is fairly comparable to other caliber brands. It comes in three different colorways (Club Navy, Racer Black, and Supermoon White) and three different sizes.

The Chapter is designed with the thoughtful bells and whistles an everyday rider needs. We’re talking interchangeable visors to reduce glare and increase your field of vision, a multi-use magnetic tail light, and eight well-placed vents that capture airflow and pass it through the inner cooling channels. Add to this our integrated fit system to dial in a snug fit and a secret PopLock to securely leave your helmet behind with your bike.

Plus, every Chapter helmet is backed by our Free Accident Replacement guarantee. That means if you’re ever in an accident (we truly hope you're not!) and your helmet is damaged, we’ll replace it for free.

Don’t take our word for it! There’s a reason why real Thousand riders love and trust their Chapter helmet. We pour over every review to make sure that you’re satisfied with your purchase. Riders will often tell us that their head feels safe and they feel more confident while wearing a Chapter helmet. Other riders appreciate how lightweight our Chapter is while riding. Descriptions including “fits perfectly,” “quality,” “comfortable,” and “bright light” commonly pop up in reviews, too.

We’re blushing over your gushing! We’re constantly trying to evolve our designs to meet the needs of modern riders. So your feedback really does mean a lot to us and supports the process.

A Fashion Statement

My first impressions of this helmet is of its appearance. It is sleekly designed through tue entire helmet’s overall silhouette, and the color options offered compliment my Vanmoof perfectly in every way. My second is of Thousand itself. Simply reading through what this company is about actually gave their gear an even more appealing product to want to wear. Do I wish Thousand would include the rest of the amor pieces like chainmail, a plated chest piece, and a shield? Yes. But a helmet is a good start all things considered. Third, using its functionalities like, the helmet’s pop lock feature, adjustable straps, and the rear light make it such a better choice amongst all of the other competitors. And magnets are surely becoming a futuristic form of connection, yet has always been around. So this helmet may very well grab from the retro vibe, but its features are ancient. I love how the light is an optional attachment, because sometimes I feel as though every product I own is riddled with technology. If my electric bicycle was simply and only just that it would be rendered immobile. The light on this helmet is for safety purposes, of course. But sometimes lights can actually draw more, undesired attention to oneself. Fourth, after having used this helmet I can, safely, say that I now do helmets! And the complimentary bag that Thousand includes may seem like an unnecessary addition, but the bag itself encourages the consumer to unconsciously take good care of one’s ownership. And, that nice things do come with nice stuff. Finally, the helmet does take some time to feel rightly adjusted. One may have to tweak its fit in between rides at times, but that’s if one’s rides are wildly or the wind is being absurd or because that’s the nature of one’s hairstyle. I do hope Thousand has the ambition to make their helmet more environmentally friendly. It’s an impossible endeavor, but if I trusted any helmet company it would be them to drive for less synthetics and more natural materials and uses. Not all of my thoughts are included here, but hopefully this review will serve as a different point of view from the rest. And all that truly matters is one’s own, personal journey with the things they love.

Has gotten me back into Helmet wearing

I haven’t worn a helmet in years. They are generally silly looking, uncomfortable, and a pain to carry around. This helmet has changed my mind. I’ve gotten numerous compliments on my “cool” helmet, it’s not terribly hot to wear, and I feel safe. I have the white helmet and I feel like it is super visible to drivers. The magnetic light is awesome and super bright. The magnetic snap is great and easy to use. MIPS certified means that I feel safer wearing this helmet, however I’m fully aware that a helmet can only do so much to protect. The pop-lock doesn’t work with my chain lock, but it’s a neat feature if it works for you. I do find that upon removal it pulls random strands of my long hair, but it’s a minor annoyance. The visor is not great in the rain, since there is a gap which allows water to fall, but that’s a part of it being removable. This is a great helmet and I have been converted.

Chapter Helmet

I totally love this helmet. Feels and looks great. I feel much more secure with the red light attached on the back while blinking. I am quite sure it catches the attention of drivers behind me.

Almost a 5 Star but 4 is all it gets !

Interior padding is minimal, could use a better / thicker / form adapting material. For a balding or shaved head it is hard on the crown of my head. After market padding seems to be needed…why don’t you offer that as an option? The Chin strap should be longer on the large helmet for those of us with large heads and longer necks …an additional inch in the strap would have been be greatly appreciated. Very stylish and stable when riding.

Just a bike helmet

Great packaging and marketing. Product quality is good as well. I was just out of the size range of the medium so I ordered the large, it looks quite out of proportion. At speeds over 23 mph the wind noise sounds like a car is behind you, so something that takes getting used to. The mips technology can be found in helmets at a much lower price point.

Noggin case

I initially was attracted to the styling, saw it/bought it off Facebook, and it’s a really nice looking helmet. It felt weird at first, just wasn’t sitting right or something but next time I put it on it became my new #1 helmet, except for when super hi-visibility is required, such as heavy-traffic commuting, when I still use my bright-dayglo green clinker. The Chapter sits perfectly now, and I love the magneto-clip chin strap because I frequently am pulling my helmet on and off with one hand to get that bug out or scratch that itch, and this clip works with one hand. I was fond of the wicking brim insert in ‘big green’ but I’ve adopted a doo-rag/bandanna approach to sweat control and the Chapter really fits well with this additional layer. I get full MIPS protection in a lighter, styley looking (I got NAVY) helmet that comes with a brilliant (both meanings) tailight and magnetic contact helmet mount that is exceptional and WILL NOT fall off. The lock pop-out is cute and works perfectly. Great helmet!

Great Urban Helmet

I use my Chapter MIPS Helmet with the tail light as well to e-skateboard around town and to-and-from work almost everyday. Super comfortable, and I get compliments on it when I stop into coffee shops to grab something on the way.
